The Spiritual Meaning Behind the Element of Fire – Leo, Sagittarius and Aries

Every witchy sister appreciates fire and smoke.

When you light your sage smudge stick, when you blow out the candle or it goes out by itself (spooky), and the smell of smoke in your hair after sitting by the fire.

It gives off something magickal, almost unearthly like it’s from a different world. The smoke dances in the air swirls from the fire, happy to be here for a brief moment in time before it disappears into nothing.

I love watching the smoke from palo santo, it dances, creating spirals and these beautiful patterns that a regular candle never could.

As palo santo comes from a holy tree naturally it makes sense that it also creates beauty when lit up.

Each earthly element is associated with a different zodiac sign, and with mine being a Leo, my love for fire has always been a big part of me.

I’ve always loved incense sticks, I remember my nan used to burn one and usually around Christmas time and I remember smelling the spiciness in the air.

To this day I burn incense sticks (with Satya being my go-to incense) to purify and cleanse the air in my home, spreading the delicious spiciness throughout the home. Of course incense sticks are very spiritual now and are used in many rituals and by many religions, so are a great tool to starting our your spiritual discovery journey if you’re new.

As my appreciation for fire/smoke grew, I began to wonder – what is the mystery and magick behind “fire“?

Fire as a Spiritual Element

Fire is a masculine element, it symbolises passion, action, lust, bravery/courage. It’s also associated with change, passion, creativity, motivation, willpower, drive and sensuality.

We mustn’t forget the dangers of fire – how powerful it is and how within just a few moments it can destroy everything. If it spreads uncontrolled, it can lead to tragedy, leaving nothing behind.

Fire also destroys to make space for something new to grow.

Same with gardening – certain plants have to be burnt so they can regrow bigger and stronger. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

When times are tough, we feel like we’ve been burnt one too many times, we must remember how we rose from those situations and what was born out of these bad, burning moments in our life.

They could be key milestones to where you are now, maybe they created a new beginning and you didn’t even know it at the time.

We mustn’t question why these difficult times and challenges happen to us, rather see them as opportunities to learn and grow.

All the best artists and creators have had their breakthroughs during the darkest of times in their career.

Fire as a Personality

As the fire element is associated with 3 of the 12 zodiac signs – Sagittarius, Leo, and Aries – these signs tend to have similar traits of personality. The common traits these signs share are passion, impulsive decisions, leading with their instinct/gut and leading/dominating.

They can be great teachers and easily spotted in the group (generally speaking).

I’m a Leo but I’m not overly confident and only take the lead in an environment I feel comfortable in. If you were to meet me for the first time, I’d probably be very shy and quiet, you’d never think I was a fiery Leo.

The story is slightly different when I’m in my element/zone or at home – I certainly like to be in charge and feel confident about my choices/decisions.

Positive and Shadow Traits

There are positive, and shadow traits to each sign/element:

Positive traits:

Shadow traits

The shadow traits can be defined as the bad side of the sign, the weaknesses, or aspects which need working through to come out stronger. In return, these shadow traits can make their way onto your good side and you can use them as positive qualities that make up your beautiful character.

Like a matchstick, fire signs love to burst into flames of enthusiasm, sudden urge to do something or a moment of “a-ha!”. Sudden inspiration and the desire to do or create something.

Fire is a source of energy, thus it needs to be nurtured, nourished and looked after to avoid burnout (which fire signs are very much prone to). To learn how to avoid burnout you can read the following article

Fire Season

Fire is associated with the summer, as it’s a fiery/warm sign, and it’s the time when the earth is closest to the Sun, the giant fireball.

This also explains why I love the sun and summer so much…

Symbol – Triangle

You may have seen the triangle tattooed on certain people, or came across the triangle as a symbol of something strong and meaningful. The illuminati also have the triangle sign, and so does the fire element.

Fire as the element in alchemy represents the connection of the 3 aspects: mind, body and soul. The triangle and 4 earthly elements all originate from the Greek philosophers who believed that the four elements (fire, earth, water and air) are the 4 pillars of existence.

The Different Meanings of Fire

Fire is a conflicting element in a way – on the one side, it causes havoc, destroys everything in its way if the fire is uncontrolled. On the other hand, lighting a matchstick is like a beginning, you need it to build up heat, and after a fire, from the ashes, new beginnings are born.

Fire is also often used in tarot with swords and batons representing bravery and courage, facing challenges directly with a warrior face on.

Fire also represents eternity – the eternal flame expression which you might have heard of, which means that as long as the flame is burning, everything in life is certain. As long as the fire keeps burning, there is hope for everything.

Eternal flames are also a symbol for those who have passed, lighting a flame and putting them on our loved ones’ memorials/graves or even at home. It has a beyond this life meaning, as the light from our world is lit up to guide their souls in the afterlife and to see the light in darkness of afterlife.

The fire has always played a great part in Greek culture, even as far as the Olympics – the flame that burns throughout the duration of the games, still practiced to this day.

Hestia, a Greek goddess was the protector of the Olympian hearth, to keep the fire flames active at all times.
